I liked to draw as a kid. At some point early on people told me I was good at it, which made me feel special. Since I liked doing it and I got positive feedback, I kept doing it. Of course that made me get better at it, and pretty soon I considered myself an artist. I mostly copied pictures made by other people, for a while primarily covers of fishing magazines. Art classes in high school introduced me to painting, at which point I branched out into copying album covers. In college I was introduced to lots of ways and reasons to make art, including the idea of exploring the interface between the outer world and one's inner world (Thanks, Larry Junkins). That resonated more than anything else and has been at the heart of my creative activity ever since. Over the years I've been inspired by many visual artists. Those to whom I feel the greatest debt of gratitude are Giorgio Morandi, Paul Klee, and the quilters of Gee's Bend.
